What white noise is
White noise spreads equal energy across every audible frequency, the sound equivalent of television static. That flatness is the point. Whatever tries to interrupt you, white noise already occupies that frequency, so the interruption has less contrast to stand out with. A fan or an air conditioner is the household version, and people have slept beside those for decades.
What it is good at
Masking speech, above all. Voices are the hardest sound to ignore, and an even hiss takes the edges off a hallway conversation, a snoring partner, or a TV through the wall. It is also the most predictable of the ambient sounds: no swell, no crackle, nothing to catch your attention at 3am.
