A Calm alternative for focus, not meditation

Calm is a content subscription: guided meditations, celebrity Sleep Stories, courses, at $69.99 a year on the App Store. If what you actually want is background sound while you work or fall asleep, you are paying for a library you will never open.

What Calm is actually for

Calm is good at what it is: thousands of guided sessions, sleep stories read by Matthew McConaughey and Harry Styles, structured programs, mood check-ins, corporate wellness deals. If you want someone to talk you through meditation, it is a reasonable product, and no ambient-sound app replaces that.

If you just want sound

Then the equation changes. Nobody needs a narrator to play rain. Calm's soundscapes are a side dish to its content library, and the price reflects the library: $69.99 every year, $399.99 for lifetime, with an account required. Its privacy label also lists purchases, identifiers and usage data used to track you, with advertising among the purposes.

Foyer is only the sound part, done carefully: real loops you place spatially around you, offline, no account, label "Data Not Collected", $9.99 once. Five years of it costs less than one year of Calm.

Sleep without a story

For sleep, Foyer's answer is a room: waves far away, a fire low in the corner, and a timer that fades everything out after you drift off. No episode to pick, no autoplay into a paywall. Set it once and it is the same room every night.

Questions

Does Foyer have guided meditations or Sleep Stories?

No, and it never will. There are no voices in Foyer at all. If guided content is what helps you, Calm or a meditation app is the right purchase; Foyer replaces only the background-sound half.

Why is Foyer so much cheaper than Calm?

Different cost structures. Calm produces content continuously and licenses celebrity narrators, so it needs recurring revenue. Foyer ships recorded loops and an audio engine that run on your device, which a one-time price covers.

Can Foyer help me fall asleep?

That is one of its two jobs. Build a quiet room, start the sleep timer, and the sounds fade out on their own. On iPhone it plays with the screen locked, and the free tier includes the timer.
